An Israeli journalist underlines that the Israel PM didn’t take seriously enough how seriously all Israelis take security

For almost 75 years, most Israelis have been proud of their judicial system. As they understand that an independent judge is better than one designated by politicians. They have also liked the idea of being the only democracy in the Middle East, a beacon of liberalism. This system has worked pretty well, with an independent Supreme Court helping defend Israeli security forces in their war against terrorism and also pursuing legitimacy in international law.

This historic and shining beacon is now under severe attack, led by a coalition of ultra nationalists, zealots and reactionary conservatives united by an ideology of resentment against the Supreme Court. Fuelled by a politically nurtured rage, inspired by the historic misdeeds of the founding fathers of the Jewish state, and with questions regarding the Palestinian issue off the table, these Israeli conservatives have adopted the path of 3Ps: Populism, polarisation and post-truth, aiming to delegitimise the “old liberal order”.
