NEW DELHI: An agent of the Mossad, Israel’s intelligence service, has been executed in Iran, according to several news reports.
The agent was accused of working with foreign intelligence services, including Mossad, and was charged with releasing classified information. The authorities carried out the execution in Zahedan prison, located in the capital of the southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchistan.
The name of the agent remains unknown .
In April 2022, Iranian intelligence officers arrested three individuals, claiming they were part of a group connected to Mossad. It's unclear if the person executed later was one of them.
Iran and Israel have accused each other of spying and engaging in a covert conflict for years. Israel considers Iran its main threat and has threatened military action to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. Iran denies seeking such weapons and promises a strong response to any aggression.
Iran occasionally announces the detention of individuals it alleges are spying for foreign countries, including the United States and Israel. In 2020, Iran executed a man found guilty of leaking information to the US and Israel about a prominent Islamic Revolutionary Guard general, later killed by a US drone strike in Iraq.
Iran doesn't recognize Israel and supports anti-Israeli armed groups in the region, such as Hezbollah and Hamas.
