The events caused significant alarm on Tuesday, following strikes that killed at least 23 individuals and injuring 73 others at a school established by UNRWA. However, the Israeli military said that the attack aimed at active 'terrorists' present there, saying that it was conducted with precise intelligence.

Meanwhile, Israeli defence forces accused Hamas of "exploiting civilian structures and population as human shields for its terror attacks against the State of Israel."

It also claimed on Friday that Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif was killed in a strike.

"There are increasing signs that imply a successful elimination of (Mohammed) Deif," Israeli military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said.

Hamas's operation against Israel, which started on October 7 last year killed at least 1,195 people. Israel's retaliation killed over 38,848 in Gaza, mostly civilians.
