‘Hamas is the only self-defence many Palestinians have against Israeli brutality’

The violence in West Asia cannot be resolved if the international community does not stay impartial, says Tahani Mustafa, senior Palestine analyst at the International Crisis Group

On October 7, Hamas mounted a surprise attack against Israel, in which hundreds were killed and an unknown number were taken hostage. In response, Israel has launched airstrikes in Gaza. It has also withheld all aid, electricity and water, and has threatened a ground invasion very soon, sparking fears of a humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Tahani Mustafa is senior Palestine analyst at International Crisis Group, where she works on issues such as security as well as socio-political and legal governance in the West Bank. She is based in London now and shuttles between the UK, Jordan and Palestine on work. She explains why Hamas remains popular in Gaza and why an Israeli ground invasion could trigger a bigger war in West Asia. Edited excerpts:
