NEW DELHI: Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced on social media that Colombia will halt coal exports to Israel due to its military actions in the Gaza Strip, actions he described as 'genocide.'

According to Petro, the draft decree will be published by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Tourism between June 11 and 17 for public comments before it becomes effective. This report comes from Xinhua news agency.

Colombia exported $447 million worth of coal to Israel in 2023, marking a 57 percent decrease from 2022. In the first four months of 2024, Colombia exported $88 million worth of coal to Israel.

Relations between Colombia and Israel have become increasingly strained since the latest round of conflict between Israel and Palestine began on October 7, 2023. Petro has repeatedly criticized Israel and has urged other Latin American countries to join Colombia in condemning Israel.

On May 1, Petro announced that Colombia had severed diplomatic relations with Israel.
