Ceasefire at risk? Israel kills six Palestinians in Gaza; Hamas cracks down on rivals
Israeli soldiers killed several Palestinians in northern Gaza on Tuesday, a day after US President Donald Trump announced the end of the two-year war in the coastal enclave during his visit to the Middle East.
According to the Palestinian news agency , cited by the Financial Times, six people were killed when Israeli drones fired on residents who were inspecting their homes in the Shuja’iyyah neighbourhood, east of Gaza City.
However, the said its troops opened fire after “several” Palestinians approached the “yellow line,” the boundary to which Israeli forces withdrew under the multi-stage peace plan proposed by Trump.
Meanwhile, , weakened by the war, has tried to reassert control in Gaza since the ceasefire began, killing at least 33 people in a crackdown on groups challenging its authority, news agency Reuters reported. The group appears to have received a US nod to temporarily manage security in the territory.
Hit hard by Israel during the conflict that began with the October 7, 2023 attacks, Hamas has gradually returned its men to the streets of Gaza since the ceasefire started on Friday, moving cautiously in case the truce breaks down, according to two security sources in the area.
The latest killings came four days after a fragile ceasefire took effect, which allowed a hostage and prisoner exchange on Monday — the first phase of Trump’s plan to end what has been the deadliest war in the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Nearly 68,000 Palestinians and about 2,000 Israelis have been killed in the fighting, which has left much of Gaza destroyed and created a severe humanitarian crisis.
Addressing the Israeli parliament and later a summit in Egypt, Trump described the developments as a "historic dawn of a new Middle East" and predicted "the start of a grand concord and lasting harmony" between Israel and its neighbours.
