CAIRO: An African Union delegation headed by Alpha Oumar Konare, former president of Mali, met with deposed president Mohamed Morsi on Tuesday, a day after Egypt’s rulers let European Union envoy Catherine Ashton meet him at an undisclosed location. The African Union Wise Men Committee delegation spent an hour with Morsi, state news agency MENA reported.
This is the second meeting between a foreign delegation and Morsi since he was ousted in a military-backed coup on July 3. Morsi has not been seen in public since his ouster and his whereabouts have not been disclosed, even to his visitors.
Meanwhile, the militarybacked government on Wednesday ordered the police to break up the protests by Morsi’s supporters, saying they pose an “unacceptable threat” to national security.
Prosecutors have referred three top leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood to trial for allegedly inciting the killing of protesters last month.
