Abu Dhabi rolls out variable speed limits on Sheikh Zayed Road: What motorists must know about the new system
The UAE’s capital is set to introduce a new variable speed limit system on one of its busiest thoroughfares - Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Road - starting October 27, 2025, the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), also known as Abu Dhabi Mobility, announced on Friday.
Officials said the initiative aims to enhance road safety and improve traffic flow by allowing authorities to adjust speed limits in real time, depending on driving conditions. Digital signboards will display speed changes to guide motorists accurately.
According to AD Mobility, the variable limits may be enforced under four main scenarios:
The ITC urged motorists to strictly follow the displayed speed limits, stressing that the adjustments aim to reduce collisions and ease congestion, not to impede traffic unnecessarily.
Officials also reminded drivers that the maximum speed limit on Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street was lowered from 120 km/h to 100 km/h earlier this year, as part of a broader effort to standardize limits across the capital’s major roads.
The authority said the new advanced automated system will seamlessly integrate with existing intelligent traffic management infrastructure to respond swiftly and efficiently to rapidly changing urban road conditions. The innovative move aligns with Abu Dhabi’s comprehensive long-term smart mobility plan to make daily road travel safer, smarter, and significantly smoother.
Motorists are strongly encouraged to stay constantly alert to the dynamic electronic signs displaying updated speed limits and cooperate fully to ensure smoother traffic movement throughout the city.
According to AD Mobility, the variable limits may be enforced under four main scenarios:
- Adverse weather conditions such as rain, fog, or sandstorms when visibility is reduced.
- Peak hour congestion, to ease bottlenecks during office rush periods.
- Major events that lead to temporary surges in traffic volume.
- Roadworks or lane closures, requiring slower and safer movement.
The ITC urged motorists to strictly follow the displayed speed limits, stressing that the adjustments aim to reduce collisions and ease congestion, not to impede traffic unnecessarily.
