6.1 magnitude earthquake strikes Eastern Turkey, reports EMSC

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Turkey on Wednesday, according to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). The quake occurred at a depth of 9 km below the surface, the EMSC reported.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

“We have not received any reports of any problems so far,” Malatya Mayor Sami Er told the state-run Anadolu Agency, adding that officials were still assessing possible damage in more remote areas.

The last major earthquake to hit Turkey was in February last year, during the Turkey-Syria earthquake. Officials and medics reported that 9,057 people died in Turkey and 2,992 in Syria from the 7.8-magnitude tremor, bringing the total death toll to 12,049. Over 250 Indian personnel from the NDRF and Army were engaged in rescue and relief operations in Turkey and Syria under 'Operation Dost'.
