JAPAN EARTHQUAKE: Toll rises; Suzu Mayor says situation 'catastrophic'

Japan experienced a devastating earthquake on New Year's Day. The earthquake claimed the lives of at least 55 people. Rescue teams are facing challenges in reaching coastal areas affected by the quake. Freezing temperatures are adding to the difficulties faced by rescue operations. Coastal regions are particularly at risk, with many feared trapped under potentially thousands of collapsed homes. Suzu, a town near the epicenter, witnessed severe destruction, with around 90% of its households possibly destroyed. The mayor of Suzu, Masuhiro Izumiya, described the situation as catastrophic.
