Israel's airstrikes on Gaza kill more than 400 shattering ceasefire

Israel’s airstrikes on Gaza

Israel launched airstrikes across the Gaza Strip early Tuesday, killing at least 404 Palestinians, including women and children. This surprise bombardment shattered a ceasefire that had been in place since January 2025, threatening to fully reignite the 17-month-old war between Israel and Hamas.

2/7

Israel’s military response and evacuations

The Israeli military has ordered evacuations from eastern Gaza, including the northern town of Beit Hanoun and other southern areas. Netanyahu's office announced that Israel would increase military actions against Hamas.

3/7

Casualties and destruction in Gaza

In the southern city of Rafah, a strike killed 17 members of one family, including at least 12 women and children. Ambulances have been transporting the wounded to hospitals like Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, where many victims, including children, are receiving emergency care.

4/7

The Hostage situation

A senior Hamas official warned that Netanyahu’s decision to resume airstrikes was a "death sentence" for the hostages. Hamas claims that at least four senior officials were killed in the strikes, but there were no immediate reports of retaliatory attacks from Hamas.

5/7

Pressure on Netanyahu

Netanyahu faces growing domestic pressure due to his handling of the hostage crisis and his decision to fire the head of Israel's internal security agency. Mass protests are being planned in Israel in response to these decisions, with criticism directed at his government's approach to the war and the failure to negotiate a second phase of the ceasefire

6/7

Ceasefire negotiations stalled

Despite earlier phases of a ceasefire, talks for a second phase have stalled. Hamas has demanded an end to the war and a full withdrawal of Israeli troops in exchange for the release of the remaining hostages. Israel insists it will not end the war until it has dismantled Hamas' military capabilities and freed all hostages.

7/7

Humanitarian crisis

The war has already resulted in a severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with over 48,000 Palestinians killed and millions displaced. The ceasefire had temporarily alleviated some of the suffering, but the renewed violence threatens to worsen conditions.
