Indian cities among worst traffic hotspots, London world's slowest city

Bengaluru and Pune, two Indian cities, made it to the list of cities grappling with the worst traffic conditions in the world, according to the TomTom Traffic Index.

Bengaluru and Pune secured spots among the world's top ten worst traffic-hit cities in 2023, with average travel times per 10 km recorded at 28 minutes 10 seconds and 27 minutes 50 seconds, respectively.

Bengaluru, India's IT capital, was identified as the second most congested city globally in 2023, with the worst travel day recorded on September 27, where it took an average of 32 minutes to drive 10 km.

Delhi and Mumbai were also impacted by traffic, featuring in the TomTom Traffic Index, with average travel times of 21 minutes 40 seconds and 21 minutes 20 seconds, respectively, to cover 10 km.

The UK capital, London, secured the title of the world's slowest city to drive through in 2023, with an average speed of 14 kmph during rush hour, as reported by TomTom.

London emerged as the city worst affected by traffic in 2023, with an average travel time of 37 minutes per 10 km, followed by Dublin and Toronto.

In 2023, the average speed decreased in a significant number of cities, as reported by TomTom. Over 60% of the cities witnessed increased fuel prices, impacting the average budget by 15% or more between 2021 and 2023.

TomTom's Traffic Index evaluated 387 cities across 55 countries based on factors like average travel time, fuel costs, and CO2 emissions, utilizing data from over 600 million in-car navigation systems and smartphones.
