The Christian Democratic Union of Germany, the conservative opposition party is set to win in the election that happened in Germany on Sunday. With this, Friedrich Merz is set to become Germany’s chancellor.
In a post on his official account on X on Sunday, Merz wrote, "We are living in a time of great challenges and crises. I was very pleased with the congratulations from home and abroad. Together with our allies, Germany will contribute to freedom and security in the world."
The party in power Scholz's Social Democrats is witnessing a significant decline, while the Alternative for Germany (AfD) is heading for the strongest showing for a far-right party since World War II.
The election occurred amidst European challenges, including relations with the Trump administration, the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, and continental security concerns.
