​Ukraine celebrates 33rd Independence Day amid ongoing conflict with Russia

Ukraine is celebrating its 33rd Independence Day today. On this day, Ukraine declared independence from the Soviet Union almost 33 years ago.

On this day in 1991, Ukraine's Parliament adopted The Act of Declaration of Independence of Ukraine, and the country became a sovereign democracy.

Ukraine marked a pivotal moment in its history as it transitioned to a sovereign democracy through the adoption of the declaration. The process was conducted by the nation's Parliament.

This significant decision by Ukraine's Parliament led to the establishment of the country as an independent state.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy pays tribute to freedom fighters. In a tweet, he said, "We will always remember our heroes and be grateful to everyone who defended our statehood and independence. Eternal and bright memory to our defenders who fought for free Ukraine!"

Earlier this week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the Sumy region and shared a video from a deserted, forested area. In his video, Zelensky mentioned this location is "a few kilometres" from where Ukrainian forces crossed into Russia on August 6.

"A few kilometres," Zelensky said, highlighting the proximity to the significant military action that took place earlier.
