The Kremlin announced on Thursday that the next round of US-Russia talks could take place on Sunday or early next week. This follows the news that Washington is also scheduled to hold talks with Kyiv in Saudi Arabia in the coming days.
US President Donald Trump had conversations earlier this week with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov clarified that while the talks might not happen on Sunday itself, discussions are underway to finalize the timing, possibly starting early next week, news agency AFP reported.
Zelenskyy had mentioned the day before that Ukraine and the US were preparing for meetings in Saudi Arabia soon.
It remains unclear whether US officials will meet with both Ukrainian and Russian representatives on the same day, or if there is a possibility of direct face-to-face talks between Kyiv and Moscow.
US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz stated on Wednesday that "technical teams" from both Russia and the US would meet in Riyadh to focus on expanding and implementing the partial ceasefire that President Trump brokered with Russia.
Putin rejected a US-proposed unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine, agreeing only to a 30-day halt on strikes targeting energy infrastructure.
