Ukraine's SBU announced the arrest of a special operations forces unit commander for allegedly sharing operational plans with Russia's GRU military intelligence.
"The aggressor was most interested in intelligence on sabotage and reconnaissance raids by Ukrainian special forces behind the front line in the Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, and Crimean directions," SBU said via the Telegram messaging app.
The detained officer, holding the rank of lieutenant colonel, had access to sensitive information regarding planned routes, weaponry and intended targets, as detailed in the statement, Reuters reported.
The intelligence was intended to be used by Russian forces to neutralise special forces personnel both at the front line and in Russian-controlled areas of southern Ukraine.
According to the SBU, whilst the unit commander was activated by Russian military intelligence in spring 2023, his recruitment occurred prior to Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022 through his Russian contacts.
The security service indicated that Ukraine's senior military command assisted with the investigation, and the accused could receive a life sentence if found guilty of treason.
