This man painted Starry Night on water, made people almost weep
NEW DELHI: The video of a Turkish artist replicating Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night by painting it on water - yes, on water - has been watched more than 9 million times in just 24 hours.
What is painting on water? It's a Turkish art form called Ebru. Even the Turks don't know where or when or how it originated.
Garip Ay, a Turkish blog about this art form, says the process of creating a painting starts with taking a basin of water and making it thicker or more viscous by adding things like oil to it. Then, when you go to paint on it, patterns are formed on the surface of water.
The artist takes these patterns that are formed and transfers it on to paper, destroying the work on water while doing so. The result of this process is unique, literally, as it is impossible to get the same patterns more than once. The painting will always be different.
The web site says Ebru was probably born in Turkistan in Central Asia, and from the 17th century onward, came to be known as 'Turkish Paper' in Europe.
It adds that the Turks, "with their sensitive souls and their mystic personalities", started to make 'Turkish Paper' in the 15th century and they became very good at it.
As one very moved viewer commented: No, he's not curing cancer or solving global warming but creativity such as this reinforces my belief any problem can be fixed, eradicated, improved by thinking outside of the box, applying ingenuity, fortitude, distancing from paths of status quo and forging new trails using imagination, wisdom, courage."
Now, if only Turkey's "sensitive souls" would help solve India's problem and allow it - not Pakistan - to gain admission to the Nuclear Suppliers Group .
You can watch an artist paint Starry Night, below, but it's guaranteed you won't be able to replicate it.
