Russia-Ukraine War News: Shelling cuts power to Ukraine nuclear site
As he turns 70, Russian President Vladimir Putin finds himself in the eye of a storm of his own making: His army is suffering humiliating defeats in Ukraine. The death toll from a missile attack on apartment buildings in a southern Ukrainian city rose to 11 as more Russian missiles and — for the first time — explosive packed drones targeted Ukrainian-held Zaporizhzhia on Friday. Zaporizhzhia is one of four regions in Ukraine that Russian President Vladimir Putin has annexed in violation of international laws. While the nuclear plant has been under Russian control for months, the city of the same name remains under Ukrainian control.
20:30 (IST) Oct 08
The International Atomic Energy Agency said the plant's link to a 750-kilovolt line was cut at around 1 a.m. Saturday.

"The resumption of shelling, hitting the plant's sole source of external power, is tremendously irresponsible. The Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant must be protected," the IAEA quoted its chief Rafael Grossi as saying in a statement.
Russia and Ukraine have blamed each other for shelling at the site of Europe's biggest nuclear plant that has damaged buildings and threatened a catastrophic nuclear accident. The International Atomic Energy Agency is pushing for a protection zone to be set up to prevent further shelling.

Kyiv reaction to Crimea bridge blast shows 'terrorist nature': Moscow
Russia's foreign ministry on Saturday said Ukraine's reaction to a huge blast that ripped through the bridge linking Moscow-annexed Crimea to the mainland showed Kyiv's "terrorist nature". "The reaction of the Kyiv regime to the destruction of civilian infrastructure shows its terrorist nature," the ministry's spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Telegram.
Russia on Saturday opened a criminal probe into a blast that blew up a truck and heavily damaged a vital bridge linking Moscow-annexed Crimea to the mainland.Russia's investigative committee said it had "initiated a criminal case in connection with the incident on the Crimean bridge," adding that "a truck was blown up". "According to preliminary information, this morning on the automobile part of the Crimean bridge from the side of the Taman Peninsula, a truck was blown up, which caused seven fuel tanks to ignite on a train heading towards the Crimea peninsula," the committee said.
The fire occurred hours after explosions rocked the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv early on Saturday, sending towering plumes of smoke into the sky and triggering a series of secondary explosions.

The crossing is a pair of road and rail bridges that Russia built after it seized and annexed Crimea from Ukraine in violation of international law in 2014.

Putin marks low-key birthday as Ukraine pressures mount
Russian President Vladimir Putin marked his 70th birthday with little fanfare and a decree targeting a key Western energy investment, but signs gew that key parts of his Ukraine invasion were unravelling to trigger unprecedented criticism at home. News programmes made only glancing references to Friday's event and celebrations were low-key - in contrast to just a week ago, when Putin held a huge concert on Red Square to proclaim the annexation of nearly a fifth of Ukrainian land.
