The 88-year-old pontiff was delivering his annual Christmas "Urbi et Orbi" message, addressing the faithful gathered at St. Peter's square in the Vatican.

The Pope described the situation in Gaza as "extremely grave," urging an immediate ceasefire and the release of hostages held by Hamas. He highlighted the plight of the people in Gaza, worn down by war and hunger, and called for unhindered access to humanitarian aid.

“I think of the Christian communities in Israel and Palestine, particularly in Gaza,” Francis said, expressing solidarity with those affected by the ongoing conflict.

Turning to Ukraine, the Pope denounced the devastation caused by Russia's missile and drone attacks, which intensified on Christmas morning. "May the sound of arms be silenced in war-torn Ukraine," he appealed, urging both sides to embrace dialogue and work towards a "just and lasting peace."

The pontiff extended his plea to Sudan, a nation grappling with 20 months of brutal civil war and a looming famine. He called on the international community to facilitate humanitarian aid and support new peace negotiations to ease the suffering of civilians.

The Pope also invoked the Holy door of St. Peter's Basilica, which he opened on Christmas Eve to launch the 2025 Jubilee, as representing God's mercy, which "unties every knot; it tears down every wall of division; it dispels hatred and the spirit of revenge."
