Icelandic town evacuated

A town near the Icelandic capital Reykjavik, housing around 4,000 residents, was evacuated due to concerns of a potential volcanic eruption sparked by numerous tremors, according to authorities. (ANI photo)

State of emergency declared

Iceland declared a state of emergency following the sequence of strong earthquakes. This seismic activity is pointing towards a potential volcanic eruption near Sundhnjukagigar, located about three kilometers (1.86 miles) north of the town of Grindavik. (AP photo)

Town of Grindavik Evacuated

Situated approximately 40 kilometers southwest of Reykjavik, the town is in close proximity to the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa resort, a well-liked tourist spot that temporarily closed earlier this week as a precautionary measure. Grindavik is also adjacent to the Svartsengi geothermal plant, primary provider of electricity and water for the 30,000 residents of the Reykjanes peninsula. (AFP photo)

The series of earthquake

The Met Office recorded 500 earthquakes from Friday evening to Saturday morning, with 14 magnitude 4.0 or higher. The largest, a 5.2 magnitude tremor north of Grindavik, was reported by the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO). Since late October, the IMO has documented around 24,000 tremors in the peninsula, including a cluster of nearly 800 earthquakes from midnight to 1400 GMT on Friday.(AFP photo)

Magma Rising Closer to the Surface

The Icelandic Met Office initially anticipated a volcanic eruption in days due to magma accumulation five kilometers below the surface. Yet, subsequent observations indicated rising magma near the surface between Sundhnjukagigar and Grindavik, suggesting a potential earlier eruption. (Reuters photo)

Iceland's volcanic past

Iceland, with 33 active volcanic systems, holds the highest count in Europe. Since 2021, three volcanic eruptions occurred on the Reykjanes Peninsula, specifically in March 2021, August 2022, and July 2023. However, all three eruptions were situated at a considerable distance from any infrastructure or populated areas. (AFP photo)
