A teacher was injured in a stabbing attack at a vocational college in the western German city of Essen on Friday, police said.
"According to current information, the teacher suffered stab wounds during the attack," police stated in a statement as reported by the news agency AFP.
The teacher was taken to hospital by emergency services.
A suspect has been detained after fleeing the scene.
"Police used firearms in the arrest, during which the suspect was injured," police said, as quoted by the agency.
Police said earlier that a "major operation" was underway around the college, with "a large number of officers on site."
According to German newspaper Bild, the victim was a female teacher who suffered a stab wound to the stomach and was undergoing emergency surgery.
The BIB vocational college in Essen provides training in nutrition, domestic science, social care, and health care, as stated on its website.
Authorities have not disclosed details about the victim’s or suspect’s identity, nor commented on a possible motive.
