NEW DELHI: Elon Musk has condemned the ongoing series of strikes targeting Tesla facilities in Sweden. Workers, advocating for collective bargaining rights, have initiated what looks like the most significant labor dispute in decades to preserve Sweden's union model from global labor practices, reports The Guardian.
The influential trade union IF Metall has spearheaded the strike across eight Tesla sites in Sweden, now spanning five weeks.
This marks the first instance of Tesla employees participating in a strike. In a post on X, Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla has termed the situation as "insane."
IF Metall has affirmed its commitment to persist with the strikes for as long as necessary. The union asserts that it took this action in response to Tesla's refusal to enter into a collective agreement with its members.
Collective agreements, which includes salary, pension, working hours, and holidays, serve as a fundamental pillar of Sweden's labor market model. These agreements, in theory, empower unions rather than the state to govern various facets of the labor market.
Despite a decline in union membership over recent decades, a substantial number of workers in Sweden remain affiliated with unions, with approximately nine out of ten employees benefiting from collective arrangements.
The ongoing Tesla strike has triggered secondary actions from eight additional unions, posing a potential threat of extension to neighboring Norway. Fellesförbundet, the largest private sector union in Norway, has expressed readiness to engage in sympathy action in solidarity with the Tesla strike.
