Tibet, China's stability linked
BEIJING: Chinese President Hu Jintao said that the stability of Tibet was linked to that of China as a whole. This is the first time that a Chinese leader has gone to such lengths to emphasise the need for stability in Tibet.
"The stability in Tibet concerns the stability of the country, and safety in Tibet concerns the safety of the country," Hu said while talking to a delegation of law-makers representing Tibet Autonomous Region at the National People's Congress.

The statement comes soon after Icelandic singer Bjork drew the ire of Chinese leaders by shouting "Tibet! Tibet!" at the end of her concert in Shanghai last Sunday. The concert featured her song, 'Declare Independence', which was followed by her outburst.
The Chinese government is worried that certain foreign individuals, public figures and non-government organisations might raise the issue of Tibet during the Olympic Games in order to cause embarrassment to the host of the games.
Hu asked the legislators to improve their work related to religious practices and development of ethnic groups in Tibet in order to maintain social harmony and stability in the region. Legislators from the region should carry out the government's "scientific outlook on development" and promote the sound and rapid economic development, he said.
