Earthquake hits China amid freezing conditions​

Amid freezing conditions, a strong and shallow tremor hit China killing at least 116 people, state media reported Tuesday. Around 105 lost their lives and almost 400 were injured in Gansu province. The quake compounded dismay in the city of Haidong too as 11 others were killed and over 100 were reported injured. (AFP)

​6.2 magnitude earthquake reported​

According to Chinese news agencies, an earthquake of 6.2 magnitude was felt in the major city of Xi'an in northern Shaanxi province. (AP)

​Quake caused significant damage​


The earthquake collapsed buildings sending people running to safe locations. It brought homes crashing down and caused severe damage. As per the reports, power and water supplies were disrupted in some villages around the epicentre. (AP)

​Aftershocks follow initial earthquake​

China reported several aftershocks following the initial quake. Meanwhile, the officials there have warned of possible tremors of above 5.0 magnitude in the next few days. (AFP)

​President calls for 'all-out-efforts'​

Following the earthquake, the Chinese President stressed 'all-out-efforts' in the search and relief work. Rescue work in the affected areas is underway after rescue workers raced to start digging through rubble. (AFP)

​Temperatures below freezing​

According to reports, temperatures in the high-altitude area are below freezing. People were seen warming themselves by fire and emergency services set up tents for affected people. (AFP)

​Over 1000 rescue personnel on duty​

Above 1,400 firefighters and rescue personnel rushed to the disaster zone. Meanwhile, another 1,600 remained "on standby". Supplies including blankets, drinking water, instant noodles and stoves were sent to the affected area. (AFP)
