‘Where Have All the Flowers Gone?’ is celebrated as one of the most timeless folk songs of the 20th century, created by renowned American singer-songwriter Pete Seeger in 1955. The evocative lyrics of the song were inspired by the traditional Cossack folk tune ‘Koloda-Duda,’ while its melody was adapted from an Irish song. Seeger's original version, which comprised three verses, made its debut in ‘Sing Out!’ magazine. In May 1960, Joe Hickerson expanded the song by adding more verses, turning it into a continuous, circular narrative.

Pete Seeger's inspiration for ‘Where Have All the Flowers Gone?’ came to him during a flight to a concert at Oberlin College, one of the few places that would book him during the politically charged McCarthy era. While leafing through his notebook, Seeger encountered a passage: "Where are the flowers, the girls have plucked them. Where are the girls, they've all taken husbands. Where are the men, they're all in the army." These lines, rooted in the traditional Cossack folk song and referenced in Mikhail Sholokhov’s novel 'And Quiet Flows the Don', resonated deeply with Seeger.
