Once in a while, I read self-improvement books. One book that I have read a couple of times is Dale Carnegie''s How to Enjoy Life and Your Job.

This book has a special place in my shelf. Though written many years ago, it has words of wisdom and techniques that can be applied even today.

The book has a selection from his two books – How to Win Friends and Influence People and How to Stop Worrying and Start Living. Carnegie is considered the personality development guru and perhaps is the most well-known author in the field of communication and public speaking.

It''s a slim and racy book and the tips are practical. I have tried to apply some of them and found that they have really made a difference. With some advice from Carnegie, I have attempted to better my self and my surroundings. I have marked many lines in this book, which I read often. It''s a book one can read over and over again, and still get inspired and learn something new.

Under the heading, Find yourself and be yourself, the author says, ''Remember there is no one else on earth like you''. It''s so true – one must never imitate anyone but develop one''s own personality. For each one of us is unique.

His advice of how to relax is also very effective. He writes, ''The reason eyes are so important in releasing nervous tension is that they burn 1/4th of all the nervous energies consumed by the body''. So, as suggested by him, whenever possible I try and close my eyes for few minutes and try to relax.

All said and done, it''s natural for human beings to worry. Writes Carnegie, ''Tension is a habit, relaxing is a habit. Bad habits can be broken and good habits can be formed''. This book shows examples and ways to overcome the sickness of worry that occurs in our everyday lives.

A chapter on criticism is also interesting and it is full of suggestions. As he writes, ''Remember unjust criticism is often a disguised compliment. Criticism is futile because it puts a person on the defensive, usually makes him strive to justify himself. Criticism is dangerous because it wounds a person''s precious pride, hurts his sense of importance and arouses resentment''. The book is not a psychobabble – it has practical and easy tips, which can be followed and applied in one''s daily life.

<formid=367815></formid=367815>
