If there is one arena where nobody begrudges the good fortune of others, then that is sport. Everywhere else, there is always the lurking feeling that wealth and fame are somehow earned dubiously. Think of shifty operators who manipulate prices and the law and become celebrities. Sportspeople stand in stark contrast for their fame seems honestly won.

There were, indeed, a few sur-prizes, but all of that was accepted by the general public with cheery rounds of “well done” and “good luck”. There were no rumours of fixes and favouritism.
