'KPop Demon Hunters' makes HISTORY at Oscars; 'Golden' becomes first K-Pop song to receive Academy Award nomination

Netflix's animated hit 'KPop Demon Hunters' made history at the 98th Academy Awards after its golden run at the Golden Globes and Critics' Choice Awards. The film, on Thursday, scored a double nomination for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song titled 'Golden'.

This nomination marks a major milestone as it is also the first film with a Korean-Canadian director Maggie Kang to achieve this level of recognition and the first K-Pop song in history to receive an Oscar nomination.

Releasing an official statement from the team, the makers took to the film's official Instagram handle to say, "THANK YOU to the Academy for nominating KPop Demon Hunters for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song. And thank YOU the one reading this. We could never have gotten here without our fans’ support."

'Golden' nomined for Best Song

'Golden' is performed by the fictitious girl-band Huntr/x, with EJAE, Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami lending their voices to the track. In the Best Song category, 'Golden' will battle 'Train Dreams' from the film of the same name, 'Dear Me' from 'Diane Warren: Relentless', 'I Lied To You' from 'Sinners' and 'Sweet Dreams Of Joy' from 'Viva Verdi!'

'KPop Demon Hunters' nominated for Best Animated Film

The film was confirmed as eligible for the 2026 Best Animated Feature category last year. In the Best Animated Film category, it will face off against 'Arco', 'Elio', 'Little Amélie or the Character of Rain' and 'Zootopia 2'.

'KPop Demon Hunters' follows Rumi, Mira and Zoey who rock the stage as K-Pop superstars and use their secret powers - their music and voices - to protect their fans from supernatural threats.

The film had a direct-to-digital release, but went on to become the streamer’s most popular movie of all time, dominating the No. 1 spot for several weeks and topping music charts around the world. The film and its song took home the Golden Globe early this month. 'Golden' also earned three Grammy nominations, including the coveted Song Of The Year.
