According to reports, this is the first time in five years that a Korean film failed to make the cut and compete in the Cannes' main category. This excludes last year when the festival was cancelled. However, films like ‘Emergency Declaration’ directed by Hae Jae-rim, and ‘In Front of Your Face’, directed by Hong Sang-soo, have been invited to the festival this year.

‘Emergency Declaration’ was listed in the Out of Competition category among five other films in the official selection for the 74th edition of the film festival. Other films also in this category include

Todd Haynes

’ ‘The Velvet Underground’, Tom McCarthy’s ‘Stillwater,’ and

Emmanuelle Bercot

’s ‘De Son Viviant’.

The film ‘In Front of Your Face’, directed by celebrated South Korean filmmaker Hong Sang-soo, was selected for the Cannes Premiers section.

Since Park Chan-wook's ‘Handmaiden’ debuted in 2016,

Bong Joon-Ho

's ‘Okja’ (2017), Hong's ‘The Day After' (2017), Lee Chang-dong's ‘Burning,’ and Bong's "Parasite" (2019) were all nominated for the Palme d'Or at Cannes. 'Parasite' won the top prize that year and later went on to create

Oscar

history.

The Cannes Film Festival will take place from July 6 to July 17, with American filmmaker Spike Lee serving as the jury president.

This year, 24 films will compete for the Palme d'Or, including the opening picture ‘Annette’ by Leos Carax, ‘Red Rocket’ by Sean Baker, ‘The French Dispatch’ by Wes Anderson, and ‘Drive My Car’ by Ryusuke Hamaguchi.

While the 2020 edition of Cannes was postponed owing to the COVID-19 outbreak, the festival's administrators listed 56 films without prize winners. The list included ‘Peninsula,’ directed by Yeon Sang-ho, and ‘Heaven: To the Land of Happiness,’ directed by Im Sang-soo.
