Actress Hwang Jung Eum, who is known for her roles in ‘Wish’, ‘She was Pretty’, and ‘Kill Me, Heal Me’, was recently found guilty of embezzling funds for personal use. Hwang Jung Eum receives suspended punishment over compliance
As per reports shared by Allkpop, the actress’s case has been finalized and has reached its conclusion. The actress has been sentenced to 2 years in prison, with 4 4-year suspended sentence. This comes after the Jeju District Court's Criminal Division 2, presided over by Chief Judge Im Jae Nam, issued the official verdict in September.
Her team did not apply for any appeal, which is legally supposed to be filed within a week of the final verdict. Not only that, but her overall sentence was lessened when she paid off her debt and embezzlement funds in two installments in May and June.
The court shared that, "The defendant embezzled company funds for personal investments and purchases. The severity of the crime cannot be overlooked. Considering that the full amount was reimbursed and no victims remain, a suspended sentence is warranted."
What had happened?
It was shared that in July 2022, the actress had taken a role from her management agency, which cost approximately 700 million KRW. This money was invested in cryptocurrency. Later on, slowly as days went by, the amount taken from the company reached 4.34 billion KRW.
Her company also issued a statement about the actress’s arrest and sentence. They shared that "She lacked sufficient knowledge of tax and accounting matters and is deeply reflecting on her actions,” citing that the idol is not at all absconding.
