Maarigallu review: A culturally rich thriller that finds its momentum late

On the occasion of Kannada Rajyotsava, Kannada Zee5 unveils Maarigallu, a mystical folklore thriller that celebrates Karnataka’s heritage while weaving a gripping tale of faith, fear, and forgotten history. Set in the lush landscapes of Sirsi, the web series is deeply rooted in regional culture and traditions, with the ancient folk art Bedara Vesha forming the spiritual spine of its narrative. Produced by PRK Studios (Ashwini Puneeth Rajkumar) and spanning seven episodes (22–30 minutes each), Maarigallu stars Rangayana Raghu, Gopal Krishna Deshpande, Praveen Tej, Ninaad Hrithsa, Prashanth Siddi, and AS Suraj, among several other strong performers. Written and directed by Devraj Poojary, the series premiered on October 31, 2025, exclusively on Zee5 Kannada. Set in the 1990s in a village near Sirsi, Maarigallu follows a group of villagers who stumble upon an ancient clue hinting at a lost Kadamba-era treasure. What begins as a hopeful quest slowly transforms into a chilling descent into greed, betrayal, superstition, and divine mystery. As myth clashes with mortal ambition, the story unravels a secret protected by time, and something far greater than human understanding. The cast sinks deep into their characters, blending seamlessly with the rural milieu. Rangayana Raghu delivers a commanding performance, while Gopal Krishna Deshpande and Praveen Tej lend depth and conviction to their arcs. The supporting cast, particularly Prashanth Siddi, Ninaad Hrithsa, enriches the narrative with authenticity and cultural texture. The initial episodes take time building mood and characters, which may feel a tad slow. However, the narrative gains remarkable momentum from episode 5 onward, culminating in a shocking and satisfying climax that leaves a lasting impact. The camerawork beautifully captures Sirsi’s mystical landscapes and earthy charm. However, the background score could have leaned more into eerie tones to heighten suspense and enhance the supernatural ambience. A stronger musical layer would have elevated key thriller moments. The trailer had sparked emotional anticipation by reviving the late Dr. Puneeth Rajkumar through AI, a moment that deeply moved fans. Yet, the series itself does not feature even a fleeting glimpse of the beloved actor, a creative choice that feels disappointing, especially after the emotional promise set during promotion. Maarigallu is a culturally rich and atmospheric thriller that draws strength from Karnataka’s folklore, stunning location, and powerful performances. Despite a slow start and a missed opportunity in honoring the emotional teaser featuring Appu, the series rewards patience with gripping drama and a memorable finish. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☆ (4/5) A haunting heritage-inspired thriller that pays homage to Karnataka’s roots, with a climax that lingers, even if one emotional expectation remains unmet.
