When Patrick Warburton shared an awkward run-in with Ellen DeGeneres over declining sitcom invite
Patrick Warburton, widely recognized for his performances in 'Seinfeld' and 'Family Guy', recently recounted an awkward interaction with Ellen DeGeneres. During an interview, the actor revealed a tense moment that followed his decision to turn down an offer to guest star on DeGeneres' sitcom 'Ellen', which led to an unexpected and uncomfortable confrontation with the comedian.
In the mid-90s, Patrick Warburton was enjoying success playing David Puddy, the quirky on-again, off-again boyfriend of Elaine Benes (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) on 'Seinfeld'. He had also made a few guest appearances on 'Ellen', which ran from 1994 to 1998. Despite enjoying his time on the show, Warburton revealed that he declined an invitation to return for another guest spot, citing a "conflict" at the time. However, it wasn't long before the situation escalated in an unexpected way.
During his 'The Spotlight With Jessica Shaw' interview, he revealed that While dining at Orso, a Beverly Hills restaurant, Warburton was approached by DeGeneres herself. In a casual but pointed remark, she confronted him. "Too big to do my show now, huh?" she asked, referencing his decision to turn down the opportunity. Patrick Warburton tried to explain, insisting that he genuinely had a scheduling conflict, but the comedian seemed unconvinced. According to the actor, Ellen likely saw through his excuse, which added an extra layer of discomfort to the situation.
Looking back on the encounter, Patrick admitted that the exchange left him puzzled. “You don’t expect the star of the show to walk up to you and call you out on your s---,” he remarked. Despite the awkwardness, Warburton acknowledged his admiration for DeGeneres, praising her as a top-tier comedian. "She was just this remarkable comedian, you know, at the very, very top of the game," he said, describing her work on 'Ellen'.
However, after their restaurant encounter, Patrick realized he would probably never appear on 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show', which aired from 2003 to 2023. "Knowing [DeGeneres], I knew I was never, ever gonna be invited onto her talk show," Warburton reflected. He humorously resigned himself to the fact, noting that while he admired her talent and success, the door to that particular opportunity had been closed.
DeGeneres’ sitcom, 'Ellen', was groundbreaking, especially following its historic 1997 episode where her character, Ellen Morgan, came out as a lesbian. The episode paralleled DeGeneres’ real-life decision to come out, making her the first openly gay lead character on U.S. network television. The episode, and the series overall, was well-received, earning ten Emmy nominations and three wins during its run.
Despite his awkward moment with DeGeneres, Patrick Warburton has nothing but respect for her comedic abilities. However, he remains perplexed by the incident, calling the whole situation “just weird.” Nevertheless, DeGeneres moved on from her sitcom to host 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show' for 19 seasons before its conclusion in 2022. The show’s end came amid reports of a toxic workplace environment, which had surfaced in 2020.
