The Weeknd breaks his silence on the controversial sex scene in The Idol
Abel Tesfaye who was originally known as The Weeknd has now clarified his stance about his character, Tedros’ behaviour in The Idol, which had generated a lot of controversy since the outset, particularly due to graphic sex scenes and content that Rolling Stone as well as other critics have deemed as highly objectionable and bordering on the sleazy and pornographic. In the scene, Tedros is involved in an intimate session with Jocelyn, a pop singer going through her own troubles, who is played by Lily-Rose Depp. Viewers had earlier commented on Twitter and other social media platforms that the scene is extremely weird and has completely changed their perception of The Weeknd and his music, who was already one of the top singers on Earth, specially due to his hits, Starboy, Blinding Lights, Wanderlust, Can’t Feel My Face and many more.In a recent interview with GQ, Abel commented that the anger and backlash was completely unjustified since those sexual moments weren't meant to be appealing in the first place. He clarified that the scene was meant to be more satirical by explaining, “There’s nothing sexy about it. When we use Basic Instinct as a reference, we’re using Verhoeven. Verhoeven is the king of ‘90s satire thrillers—yes, there’s moments of “sexy” in his films but there are other moments that are very cheesy and hilarious." Tesfaye went on further to explain that the character Tedros, has more of an inferiority complex than anything else. He justified how the character is “a douchebag” and “there’s nothing really mysterious or hypnotizing about him. And we did that on purpose with his look and his outfits.”The show also stars Blackpink’s Jennie Kim, Suzanna Son, Rachel Sennott, Eli Roth and Hari Nef.
