Riley Keough's Daisy Jones & The Six: a treat for fans of ‘70s rock ‘n’ roll, say netizens
Daisy Jones & The Six premiered yesterday on OTT and already a host of reviews and ratings are up, especially from the boomers generation that grew up in the sixties and the seventies.
Here’s a comprehensive review from a user on IMDb, where it has been rated 8.7/10: “Daisy Jones & The Six is a compelling and immersive portrayal of the seduction and turmoil of rock 'n' roll in 1970s America. It captures the spirit and sound of that decade with an authentic production design, costumes, makeup and music. It also features stellar performances from the cast.”
Harper's Bazaar’s review by Chelsea Sanchez tells us more about the characters. For one, the characters are entirely fictional. Although, it is easy to guess that they are based on a real rock band that reigned the decade — Fleetwood Mac. The story is based on Taylor Jenkin Reid’s book of the same name and the reviewer adds that “Both the book and the show follow the structure of a music documentary, with lead singer-songwriters Daisy Jones and Billy Dunne, other members of The Six, music historians, and producers being interviewed decades after the band's highly-publicized breakup.”
Critics have been mixed in their reviews though. John Anderson of WSJ says that “Daisy” will find an audience, though its lazy reliance on ’70s counter-cultural clichés and apocryphal stories grows tiresome,” after a while, but Chris Joyce of Movies and Munchies found it “an enthralling story that focuses on the music of a successful band but doesn’t get so distracted by the music that it forgets to examine the members that make the musical journey so exciting and dramatic.”
The added bonus is that you get to see Elvis Presley’s granddaughter and Lisa Marie Presley’s daughter, Riley Keough do herself proud “rocking out like Stevie Nicks on the sexy, druggy ‘70s LA music scene,” says Peter Travers of ABC News.
