'Echo' Costume Designer Ambre Wrigley on working with Alaqua Cox: Seeing characters jump from page to screen is a very special moment to be a part of
Seeing characters transition from the pages of a comic book to the vibrant hues of the screen is a moment of magic, and few understand this alchemy better than Ambre Wrigley, the talented Costume Designer behind the web series 'Echo.' In an interview, Ambre shares insights into her collaboration with Alaqua Cox, who portrays the enigmatic Maya in the new Disney+ Hotstar series, and delves into the intricate creative process of crafting comic-book accurate costumes.
Q: What are the primary considerations you take into account when designing costumes for different characters or eras?
Ambre: My first focus is always on who or what the character is to the story. After studying variables like age, social descriptions, and location, I collaborate with the creative team to align with their visual and budgetary desires. The goal is to create an authentic, character-driven look that immerses the audience emotionally in the story.
Q: How was it working with Alaqua Cox and Marvel?
Ambre: Alaqua Cox was a joy to work with—warmhearted, professional, and communicative about the costumes, making the design process a dream. Marvel's exciting universes and beloved characters provide a unique opportunity, and witnessing them come to life on screen is a truly special experience. I hope to continue contributing to this magic for as long as Marvel and its fans will have me.
Q: Could you describe your typical creative process when conceptualizing costumes for a Marvel Project?
Ambre: The script guides my initial steps, followed by in-depth research, mood boards, and sketches. Creative meetings with the director help solidify the character's look, and legal clearances are obtained if needed. Once the director and producers give their approvals, the tangible creation of the costumes begins—an exhilarating process in itself.
Q: How do you approach designing costumes for characters with complex personalities or character arcs?
Ambre: Expressing character complexity through costumes is all in the details. From colors to textures and even changes in silhouette, each choice reflects the subtleties of a character's psyche. The most impactful arcs often involve societal shifts, such as moving from poverty to wealth or transitioning between different influences.
Q: Looking forward, are there any upcoming Marvel projects you're excited about in the field of costume design?
Ambre: I would be thrilled to work on 'Armor Wars,' and my childhood connection to X-Men makes that prospect particularly exciting. However, I'm a team player and am genuinely happy to contribute to any Marvel project. Being part of this expansive universe is a rewarding experience, and I enjoy how all the projects tie together in their unique ways.
