5 talking points from Netflix's Griselda trailer featuring Sofia Vergara
The trailer for Netflix's new limited crime series 'Griselda' released just a few days ago and everyone seems to be impressed with what the preview has to offer. The stylised action, the gritty story and Sofia Vergara in a never-seen-before avatar have got the fans talking. ETimes takes a look at all the highlights that this new series has to offer. Here are 5 talking points from the show's trailer and a total rundown on all that's exciting about this drama.
Sofia Vergara's The Godmother vibes
Sofia Vergara is playing Griselda Blanco in this series. Griselda was a Cuban cartel boss and the only woman to become a billionaire by running a drugs business in Miami. Keeping in line with this character and her real-life story, 'Griselda' showcases Sofia in a lady boss and intense avatar, which is unlike her usual, more glamorous but soft image that fans have been used to watching in Modern Family, America's Got Talent or her Hollywood movies. In this Netflix series, Sofia is looking like a total badass, mob boss and it's exciting to see the all-new vibe for the actress.
Undercurrent of fighting patriarchy
Throughout the trailer, we can see other male mob bosses pitting against Griselda and standing in her way. But Sofia's eponymous character is not one to take things lightly nor is she one to fall victim to the patriarchy or misogyny. Griselda fights back, she pulls off the hustle and successfully manages to become the leader of a drug cartel in the US. The gender dynamics of the show promise to make things exciting for the audiences, once the show releases on January 25, 2024.
Cold and relentless action
Netizens have seen some mean and impressive ladies in the past pulling off some high-octane action and stunts. But it's extremely satisfying to see Sofia Vergara's Griselda partake in some gritty action by herself. She beats up a man with a baseball bat. She uses an automatic gun to put a bullet through another adversary's head. She doesn't shy away from a physical scuffle with another gangster. Needless to say, viewers can expect some very satisfactory action sequences and stunts in this series.
'Narcos' creators have made this series
'Griselda' is created by Eric Newman, Doug Miro, Ingrid Escajeda and Carlo Bernard, with the former two being the showrunners. Newman, Bernard and Miro have also created the very popular series 'Narcos', which was based on another most-infamous Colombian drug lord, Pablo Escobar. Fans of 'Narcos' will be excited to see what the team brings to 'Griselda' and how this show will end up showcasing the thrills and spills of Medellin crime.
Similarities to Sushmita Sen's Arya
Directed by Andrés Baiz, 'Griselda' features the lead character as a mother of four and the head of family. Despite being a mother, the lead character manages to build a crime empire but still retain motherly virtues. Indian audiences might find some similarity in that premise with Sushmita Sen's Aarya series, where she too leads a family in the midst of a criminal empire, all while being protective towards her children. Glimpses of Sofia Vergara's performance and character are certainly unique, and like thousands of other fans, we'll be tuning in the day the series goes live on the OTT platform, to see what's special about 'Griselda'.
