5 Iconic haunted house movies that define terror through the decades

There's something about a haunted house movie that gets under your skin. You know the feeling: lights flicker, doors creak, and suddenly you're checking closets in your own home. These hand-picked five absolute gems from the past century that nail that creepy vibe. These aren't just scary. They stick with you, long after the credits roll.

2/6

'The Haunting' (1963)

This one's old-school done right. Four strangers visit Hill House to poke at its haunted reputation. Julie Harris plays Eleanor, a fragile woman whose mind starts cracking under the pressure. No ghosts on screen, just slamming doors, cold drafts, and that sinking feeling the house hates them. It's based on Shirley Jackson's novel, and director Robert Wise builds tension so thick you can cut it. Pure psychological terror.

3/6

'The Amityville Horror' (1979)

Dream house turns into a nightmare. James Brolin and Margot Kidder buy a place with a murder history, and it fights back with flies, bleeding walls, and creepy chants. That piggyback scene where the priest gets slammed? Still messes with me. Tobe Hooper directed after Spielberg's Poltergeist involvement, and it launched a million "based on true events" cash-ins. You feel the family's desperation.

4/6

'Poltergeist' (1982)

Spielberg wrote it, Hooper directed, and it's suburban horror gold. The Freeling kids get yanked into the TV by ghosts from a desecrated cemetery. Floating chairs, storming faces from the ceiling, and little Carol Anne's "They're heeeere!" line. Those practical effects hold up beautifully. It's a family panic wrapped in wild supernatural chaos. Pure '80s magic.

5/6

'The Conjuring' (2013)

James Wan brought haunted houses roaring back. The Perrons move into a Rhode Island farmhouse haunted by a witch. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson as the Warrens investigate 3 a.m. door pounds and shadow tricks. The sound design alone will make you jump. It's got heart too, rooting you in the family's fear before unleashing hell. Spawned a franchise, but this first one shines.

6/6

'Hereditary' (2018)

Ari Aster doesn't play nice. Toni Collette's family spirals after grandma dies, uncovering cult madness in their creepy treehouse. No jump scares, just slow-burn grief exploding into decapitations and possession. Collette's unhinged performance deserved every award. The house isn't haunted by ghosts. It's cursed by pain and hits differently, especially if you've lost someone.

These movies span generations but all capture why haunted houses terrify: they invade safe spaces. Next stormy night, fire up one. Just don't watch alone
