India clinched a fifth consecutive series triumph in the West Indies on Monday when the second and final Test of their series ended as a draw with no play possible because of rain on the final day.
Persistent rain in Port of Spain did not allow any play on Monday, resulting in a stalemate between the sides and depriving India of a 2-0 series sweep when they needed eight wickets to win.
It was the 100th test between the teams who next face off in three one-day internationals and five Twenty20 matches, which are expected to be much more competitive, given India’s recent failures in white-ball cricket and West Indies’ dominance in shorter formats of the game.
As far as red-ball cricket is concerned, India would be reasonably pleased with the smooth start to the transition of their test team.
India paceman Mohammed Siraj was named Man of the Match for his 5-60 in West Indies first innings and spin-bowling all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin took series honours for his 15 wickets over two tests and a half century in his one innings.
Following his side's Test series win, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma lauded Ishan Kishan and Virat Kohli for their contrasting, but yet fantastic performances with the bat in the match. He expressed how unfortunate it was that the teams did not get to play as the rain had the final say.
"Every win is different. Playing in WI has its own challenge. Happy with the way things went. We gave it a good shot, unfortunately, we could not get any play today. We actually went out with a positive intent yesterday. The rain had its final say. We were quite confident. You know how difficult it is batting last. We always wanted that kind of score where we wanted the opposition to go for it. There was not much on the surface. No play today, unfortunate for us," he said.
Apart from Sharma’s words, what caught the attention of fans was his stupefied dressing-room look in the middle of the game. His hilarious peep outside the dressing-room window in a befuddled manner was enough to go viral, igniting memefest.
