Sri Lankan Minister climbs tree to address public on shortage of coconuts

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka is facing acute shortage of coconuts. According to an estimate, the island nation is facing a dearth of 700 million coconuts. This is because of the high demand of coconut in local industries and for domestic consumption as well.


In midst of this, couple of days ago, a Sri Lankan news portal Hiru News reported that the country's Minister of

climbed a coconut tree to address a press conference to highlight the issue of the coconut scarcity in the country.

Another media report published by News First quoted Fernando as saying, "We hope to utilise every available plot of land for the cultivation of coconuts and boost the industry to one which would generate foreign exchange to the country." News First also reported that it took a great effort for the State Minister's supporters to get him out of the coconut tree climbing contraption.
