The Delhi and District Cricket Association (
DDCA) on Tuesday announced that the iconic
Feroz Shah Kotla stadium
is to be renamed as
Arun Jaitley Stadium in the memory of its former president who passed away on Saturday.
The renaming will take place on September 12 at a function where a stand at the Kotla will be named after India captain Virat Kohli as announced earlier.
Speaking on this initiative, DDCA president Rajat Sharma said: "It was Arun Jaitley's support and encouragement that players like Virat Kohli, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Ashish Nehra, Rishabh Pant and many others could make India proud."
DDCA also clarified that the name change only applies to the stadium. The name of the
Feroz Shah Kotla
ground would remain unchanged.
Soon after the announcement was made, many started Googling about the
stadium
and the ground. However, as Dorothy Parker said "there is no cure for curiosity," those unknown to the history of the stadium or full knowledge of the decision, thought that it was named after the veteran actor
Feroz Khan.
And while 'Feroz Shah' and 'Tughlaq dynasty' dominated the top related queries, some people also googled for 'Feroz Khan'.
Feroz Shah Kotla was a fortress which adorned the city of Firozabad, and was built by Firoz Shah Tughlaq, brother of Mohammed Bin Tughlaq.
Search result for the topic revealed that the search peaked during the early morning hours today.
Results also showed that those searching for Khan mostly belonged to Punjab.
Khan, a well known actor in the Hindi film industry was a popular Bollywood style icon. He passed away in 2009 after suffering from lung cancer.
