India has signed a $2.6 billion uranium pact with Canada during Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit, marking a key milestone in energy and strategic ties. Under the deal, Canada’s Cameco will supply uranium to fuel India’s Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs), helping the country achieve its target of 100 GW nuclear capacity by 2047.The agreement strengthens India’s energy security, reduces dependence on fossil fuels, and supports the country’s clean energy transition. It also represents a broader effort to reset India-Canada relations and expand bilateral trade, including fast-tracked negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
