Rabbi Sue Silberberg is the executive director of the Hillel Center at Indiana University. She is also the director of the newly formed Jewish Culture Center.Silberberg states the White House recently announced over 100 new calls to action to combat antisemitism in their new plan, the U.S. National Strategy to Counter Antisemitism. This plan will work to combat antisemitism for the whole of American society. This is the first ever comprehensive, national strategy to address antisemitism in the United States. One of the reasons Joe Biden ran for president was because of rising antisemitism in the United States after the Charlottesville ‘Unite the Right’ rally where neo-Nazis were calling for the death of Jewish people. American Jews are only 2.4% of the U.S. population, yet they face over 63% of reported religiously motivated hate crimes. The White House has outlined its antisemitism policies in order to address this issue.She says the U.S. National Strategy to Counter Anitsemitism could make a big difference for Jewish people as many Jewish communities in the United States feel unsafe. On college campuses, Silberberg sees students who are afraid to admit they are Jewish. There are also Jewish people who avoid visiting Jewish institutions out of a fear for their own safety. There is a need for Americans to be more educated on antisemitism and Jewish issues so real change can be enacted and the United States can become a safer place for Jewish people.Silberberg claims antisemitism is a shared problem. There is a myth that all Jews are white and upper middle class. This idea is based on misinformation, and is antisemitic in nature. It is vital for people to understand that antisemitism is real. Silberberg also calls for more education on Jewish history and the issues Jewish people face. There is a tremendous amount of antisemitism in the United States, and antisemitism is just as harmful as any other form of discrimination.
