The Muslim Personal Law allows males to have more than one wife at the same time, a practice known as polygamy. But what is the effect of this practice on the woman whose husband brings in another wife? A study published recently has found that the first wife undergoes tremendous emotional trauma. This nationwide study was conducted by the Bhartiya Muslim Mahila Andolan, an organisation that has been working on reform in Muslim Personal Laws since 2007.
