Ukraine-based orthopedic doctor of Andhra origin, Dr Giri Kumar Patil, who has two fully grown jaguars as pets, had refused to be airlifted by the Indian government immediately after the Russian invasion began. In the past few weeks, however, he is ready to shift base to India as long as he is given land and allowed access to his cats. Kumar changed his mind after Russian soldiers held him hostage and allowed to let him go only if he did not tell the outside world what was happening in Ukraine. The doctor, popularly known as Jaguar Kumar, said that the Indian government proposed to relocate the two big cats - leopard and black panther - to a zoo. He, however, wanted to be relocated to either Telangana or Andhra Pradesh with his pets. He said he would shift to Hyderabad even if he was given a wing in the city’s Nehru Zoological Park for his pets.
