The diplomatic rift between India, Canada continued to worsen as the latter was unable to provide evidence of India’s involvement in Nijjar’s killing. Canadian PM Trudeau accused India of killing Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Nijjar, who happened to be a Canadian citizen. However, Canada has been unable to provide any evidence backing its allegations regarding their accusation. India has outrightly rejected Canadian PM’s claims calling it “absurd and motivated” allegations. Meanwhile, the Indian HC to Canada reiterated India’s stand and asked for evidence of India’s involvement in Nijjar’s killing. The Indian envoy made the remarks in an interview with the Canadian platform, The Globe and Mail on Nov 03. While denying India’s role in killing, Verma said any conversations between diplomats are “protected and can’t be used as evidence” in court. Earlier, giving a sharp reply to Trudeau’s allegations, EAM Jaishankar on Sep 27 asked Canada to provide the evidence. Also, India resumed visa services in Canada for 4 categories after halting services till “further notice” in Sept amid strained ties. Last month, Canada pulled 41 diplomats from India, after New Delhi had conveyed its concerns over parity in diplomatic strength. Ottawa also halted its visa and consular services in Chandigarh, Mumbai, and Bengaluru consulates.
