Gujarat police arrest AAP leader Gopal Italia for alleged hate speech against BJP

Seven months after an FIR was registered against him, former AAP chief of Gujarat, Gopal Italia, was arrested by the city police on Monday in a case of alleged defamation. Italia termed the arrest as "arrogance of power" after he was released on bail by the police. On September 2, 2022, ahead of Gujarat assembly election, a complaint had been lodged by BJP worker Pratap Chodvadiya at Umra police station against Italia. The AAP leader was booked for allegedly using defamatory language against Gujarat BJP president C R Paatil and Gujarat minister of state for home Harsh Sanghavi. The case was being investigated by the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) of Surat police. "Italia was issued a notice to remain present at the police station. He arrived on Monday afternoon. Police arrested him and questioned him in connection with the offence," said a police officer. "He was later released on bail since it is a bailable offence. The offence was registered based on multiple public speeches given by Italia," the officer added. Italia was released after around four hours of his arrest. Courtesy: ANI
