A 23-year-old security guard who stole nearly Rs 20 lakh cash from an ATM kiosk of Union Bank of India, where he had been employed, was arrested from his hometown in Assam. Police have recovered Rs 14. 2 lakh in cash from the suspect, Diponkar Nomosudra. He had joined the bank’s ATM kiosk at 13th Cross in Wilson Garden as a security guard six months ago. Cops said he befriended the cash-loading staff and came to know the password to open the cash cassette in the ATM by peeking into their diary. He subsequently hatched a plan to steal the cash to marry his girlfriend and settle in his native place Karimganj. According to police, he committed the crime between 7. 50pm and 8. 20pm on November 17. However, his act of stealing cash and changing clothes inside the ATM kiosk was recorded on CCTV camera. The footage also showed him turning away one of the cameras and switching off the light. The incident came to light the following morning after the bank staff noticed the guard missing and the ATM emptied of cash. The bank’s senior manager Khushbu Sharma filed a complaint with Wilson Garden police, alleging that Nomosudra had fled with Rs 19,96,600.
