Amrita Sher-Gil's painting sets a new record in the art world. At a recent Saffronart auction, her oil on canvas fetched a staggering Rs 61.8 crore (USD 7.4 million), making it the highest price ever paid for Indian art at auction globally. Sher-Gil, known for her pioneering role among women artists in India, often outshone her male counterparts in the Progressive group. The painting, titled "The Story Teller" (1937), captures women in a relaxed outdoor scene, showcasing Sher-Gil's unique artistic language. This historic sale solidifies her enduring legacy in the art world.
