Gyanesh Kumar Under Fire: Opposition Moves To Remove Chief Election Commissioner After SIR Row
India’s political landscape has been shaken after opposition parties launched an impeachment bid against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The notice has been submitted in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha with support from more than 180 MPs across opposition parties. The initiative has been spearheaded by the All India Trinamool Congress with backing from the Congress, Samajwadi Party, DMK and the NCP faction led by Sharad Pawar. Opposition leaders allege the Election Commission’s voter roll revision exercise has led to the removal of genuine voters. Mamata Banerjee has repeatedly raised concerns about voter deletions in West Bengal. Under Article 324 of the Constitution, removing a Chief Election Commissioner requires a complex impeachment process similar to that used for Supreme Court judges. The motion has now set the stage for a major constitutional and political battle.
