Bengal polls: TMC leads at 27%, rivals under 15% women candidates, Women Reservation Bill Row
The debate over women’s reservation in India has intensified with the push to implement the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, which promises 33% reservation for women in Parliament and state Assemblies. However, its rollout remains linked to delimitation and Census processes, leading to sharp political disagreements. At the same time, the West Bengal Assembly elections highlight the ground reality. The Trinamool Congress has fielded the highest share of women candidates at 27%, while the BJP, Congress, and Left parties remain below 15%. Despite the national push, women still account for only about 11% of candidates overall. This contrast between legislative promise and electoral practice raises key questions about political intent, representation, and whether parties are willing to act without waiting for legal mandates.
